India Issues Fresh Guidelines For International Travellers Amid Omicron Fear

As the threat from “highly transmissible” Omicron variant scatters, the Indian government has set new guidelines for international travellers which are set to kick in from today.

The variant was first found in Botswana and later on the World Health Organization termed it as a “variant of concern”. Cases of Omicron have been found in at least 15/4 countries so far.

Several other countries have already imposed strict travel bans on South Africa to curb the spread of the new Omicron and now India has also issued its fresh guidelines for the international travellers.

According to the new guidelines, all the international travellers arriving in India will be required to fill a self-declaration form (SDF) and attack a copy of negative report of RT-PCR test and share to the airlines before boarding.

Travellers who have no travel history of those countries that are listed as ‘at risk’ countries — 2% of these travellers will be subjected to random Covid-19 testing on arrival.

If the traveller tests positive, then the sample is sent for the genome sequencing and traveller is treated as per the standard protocol and for those who tests negative, the government has advised them for home quarantine for at least 14 days.

The new guidelines have also advised for strict screening of travellers arriving in India from any of the 12 ‘at risk’ countries — the countries include South Africa, Botswana, UK, China, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Israel, Hong Kong and Singapore.

The revised guidelines are stated below:

Those arriving India from ‘at risk’ countries will have to compulsorily submit their travel history dating back 14 days earlier to the date of arrival with a copy of negative RT-PCR test report. These details can also be uploaded on the Air Suvidha portal also.

These travellers will also have to get themselves tested on their arrival and wait for the results at the airport only.

If the traveller is found negative then he will have to to follow a minimum of 7 days of home quarantine with re-test for Covid-19 on the 8th day.

Travellers who test positive on their arrival will be sent to a separate isolation facility at the airport and their sample will be sent for genome sequencing as they will go under treatment as per the standard protocol.
