IMD Issues Yellow Alert In Odisha And Kerala Amid Heavy Rain

On Sunday, the Pune area of Maharashtra experienced nonstop rain for over three hours. Within an hour, 16 mm of rain were recorded on the India Meteorological Department (IMD) rain gauge in the Shivaji Nagar neighbourhood.

On a personal rain gauge, the Bibwewadi neighbourhood of Pune reported 83 mm of rain in a few hours. Severe waterlogging can be found along JM Road and in the lower parts of the city. According to the weather report, flash flooding occurred on the Flame Campus and near the Oxford Golf Course in less than an hour.

Other regions of Maharashtra were severely affected by sporadic thunderstorms and heavy rain.

“Possibility of severe spells of rainfall in isolated areas in Amravati, Wardha, Chandrapur, and Yavatmal District of Vidarbha,” the regional meteorological department added.

A moisture intrusion has been caused by a depression over Odisha that has also affected Maharashtra and other neighbouring states. In some areas of Maharashtra, the moisture intrusion has led to thunderstorms and torrential rain. The IMD issued a Yellow Alert on Sunday for the whole state and warned of a depression across southern Odisha and a region to the southeast of Bhawanipatna.

IMD forecasted the storm “would move west-northwestward across south Chhattisgarh and south Odisha during the next 24 hours and dissipate gradually.”

IMD posted on Twitter that “Depression over south Odisha migrated over south Chhattisgarh approximately 160 west of Bhawanipatna (Odisha), 40 south-southeast of Kanker (Chhattisgarh), 100 north-northwest of Jagdalpur (Chhattisgarh), and 250 east of Chandrapur (Maharashtra).

Since August 10, there have been significant downpours in many areas of Odisha. In the wake of that, a Yellow Alert was issued for Khurda, Cuttack, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Angul, Dhenkanal, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Rayagada, Korat, Gajapati, Deogarh, and Puri regarding severe rainfall.

It was requested that fishermen stay out of the water. Mrutyunjai Mohapatra, the director general of the IMD, said that Odisha would likely experience more rain between September 17 and 18, when a new cyclonic circulation is predicted to form over the Bay of Bengal.

Additionally, authorities have been told to make preparations in advance of any unfavourable circumstances or tragedy. District collectors have been instructed to handle situations according to protocol in the meantime.

Kerala’s nine districts have received notices of the IMD Yellow Alert. According to the meteorological agency, Kerala will continue to experience heavy rains because of the abnormally low pressure in the Bay of Bengal. In remote areas, there is a warning for heavy rain.

Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts are on a yellow alert. Tomorrow is a Yellow Alert day in the districts of Idukki, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Additionally, communities with hills that have recently experienced strong rains are encouraged to maintain their attention.
