Hyderabad’s Kancha Gachibowli to See Temperature Rise of 1-4°C Without Forests, Warns Ecological Report

According to a report on Kancha Gachibowli Forest (KGF), clearing the forest will be a huge shock to Gachibowli and the adjacent communities, who are already having a hard time breathing. The area will see a temperature increase of 1 to 4 degrees Celsius.

According to an Ecological Heritage assessment on KGF written by researcher Arun Vasireddy, there are 233 bird species in the KGF, compared to 150 in KBR National Park and significantly fewer in Mrugavani National Park and other nearby Hyderabad parks. “Unlike most national parks and reserve forests, the animals are self-sustaining without any intervention. It costs nothing to maintain this green space but costs Rs 1000s of crores to create even the smallest version of it,” it said.

The survey pointed out that the KGF has the most grasslands of any green area in and around the city. It also highlighted that grassland birds like Indian Hoopoes and butterflies like Grass Yellows and Darts call the forest home. “The grassland is also the last home for the Indian Roller (Telangana’s State Bird) within Hyderabad”.

The report highlighted Murricia hyderabadensis, a unique spider, which is endemic to the KGF, discovered in 2010. “It is found nowhere else in the world,” it said.

The health of the lake and hilltop ecology, which Hyderabad depends on, is guaranteed by maintaining KGF. The research claims that the KGF is home to Hyderabad’s endemic tree-trunk spider, or “Murricia hyderabadensis,” and that it possesses the greatest natural grasslands of any green area.

As for tree diversity, the KGF has over 72 species with only forest home to Marking Nut (Semecarpus anacardium) known as Chaakali Jeedi (Washerman’s Nut) in and around Hyderabad. According to the statement, “with these trees gone, there is a history and culture that is wiped out.” The washermen community has been actively seeking this tree for decades. Vasireddy urged the State government to produce a genuine and trustworthy environmental impact assessment study, and he urged Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Ministers Bhatti Vikaramarka and D Sridhar Babu, and Forest Minister Konda Surekha to visit the KGF.
