Hotel Owners Lead Protest In Joshimath As Govt Plans Demolition

Huge protests erupted after owners of two hotels demanded compensation from the Uttarakhand government over it’s decision to demolish their hotels in Joshimath as glaring cracks surfaced in the structure.

JCBs, dumper trucks, cranes and laborers were hurried to the site today as the Malari Inn and Mount View – the two hotel are about to be razed as they leaned towards each other after development big cracks due to sinking of Joshimath.

As per the sources, hotel Mount View will be demolished first while, Malari Inn will be demolished within a day or two as its structure seems shaky because of weak base but it doesn’t have heavy cracks.

The hotel owners have claimed that they didn’t receive any notice regarding the demolition and demanded that they be compensated with one-time settlement by the government before the demolition exercise.

Despite, the continuous protests by the hotel owners and the locals against the demolition of their properties, the government is not taking a step back.

As the government readies for the exercise, the power supply to more than 500 houses and hotels have been disrupted.

Joshimath is a gateway to holy pilgrim sites of Hemkund Sahib and Badrinath. It also works as a transition point to the famous winter spot of Auli. However, the region is under danger after several buildings and houses developed big cracks.
