Hopes On Lasting Peace In Northern State As Naga Talks Underway

On Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah claimed that Naga peace talks were in progress and expressed optimism that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s effort to establish long-lasting peace in the northeastern state would be successful.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Tuensang, Shah said that after the assembly elections, certain problems pertaining to the growth and rights of eastern Nagaland would be resolved.

He asserted that there has been a 70% decrease in violent incidents in the Northeast under BJP control, indicating that insurgency is on the decline.

According to the Union home minister, civilian casualties have decreased by 83 percent in the Northeast while security force fatalities have decreased by 60%.

He expressed optimism that the Armed Force (Special Powers) Act, 1958 will be repealed throughout the northeastern state in the following three to four years, noting that the BJP government has lifted the Act from most of Nagaland.

The 60-member council will be chosen through elections on February 27, and results will be announced on March 2.
