In the incident that happened on August 28, the police had lathi-charged a group of protesting farmers, who were disrupting traffic movement at a highway near Karnal. More than 10 farmers were injured that day.
The farmers had given September 6 as the deadline to fulfill their demands. On Monday they held a meeting with the district administration which did not give any satisfactory results, following which the farmers decided to hold a ‘mahapanchayat on Tuesday morning, said Gurnam Singh Chaduni, Haryana’s Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) chief.
“We will hold a peaceful protest, but if the administration stops us, then we will break barricades,” he said. However, the farmers have no plan of blocking the national highway.
Meanwhile, the umbrella body of farmers’ protesting against the farm laws, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), have threatened to seige Karnal mini-secretariat on Tuesday if the demands are not fulfilled.
Earlier, the Haryana government had decided to suspend internet services only in Karnal but later it decided to suspend un four adjoining districts that include Kaithal, Panipat, Kurukshetra and Jind.
Around 40 teams of security personnel, including 10 of central paramilitary forces, have been deployed in Karnal, said officials.
