‘Gujarat heading towards health emergency,’ says HC on media reports

Through an oral order, Chief Justice Vikram Nath directed the high court registry to register a fresh suo motu PIL titled "In Re : Uncontrolled upsurge and serious management issues in COVID control".

Noticing the media reports on the pandemic that shows Gujarat was heading towards the situation of “health emergency”, the Gujarat High Court on Sunday initiated a PIL on its own over the prevailing Covid situation in the state.

The Chief Justice Vikram Nath has orally ordered the High Court to register a fresh PIL titled as “In Re : Uncontrolled upsurge and serious management issues in COVID control”.

The state has now registered two such PILs on the Covid situation with second being this one and the first was registered last year which is being heard on regular intervals since it got registered.

The new PIL would be heard by a division bench headed by the Chief Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Bhargav at Nath’s official residence by video conferencing.

“news channels are flooded with the harrowing tales, unfortunate and unimaginable difficulties and unmanageable conditions of the infrastructure,” said the Chief Justice.

After observing those media reports he also noted that there is a “shortfall or deficit of not only testing, beds and ICU, but also supply of oxygen and basic medicines like Ramdesivir, etc”. He further noted that the state was heading towards a health emergency.

The state reported 5,469 fresh cases on Sunday, which took the state tally to 3,47,495.
