The central government has decided to table a bill for the implementation of uniform civil code in the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, which is scheduled to begin next month, said sources.
As per the plan the bill will be sent to the parliamentary standing committee, which will collect views on UCC from different stakeholders.
The standing committee on law and personnel will collect views from representatives of legal affairs, legislative departments and law panel on “public notice issued by the Law Commission of India on June 14, 2023,
inviting views from the various stakeholders on the Uniform Civil Code, under the subject ‘Review of Personal Laws'”.
As per the sources, the monsoon session will begin in the third week of July. Initially the sittings will take place in the old building of Parliament but gradually the sittings will be shifted to the new building of Parliament.
On Tuesday, PM Modi while addressing BJP workers in Madhya Pradesh stressed upon the implementation of uniform civil code across all communities.
PM Modi in his address also said, even Supreme Court supports implementation of UCC. Only those who practice vote bank politics are against the same, he said targeting the opposition.
Meanwhile, Opposition has alleged the timing of PM Modi’s views on UCC as when four states are up for elections this year. BJP is pressing on implementing UCC for political gains, said the Opposition.
Congress has also alleged PM Modi of using UCC issue to divert public from the important issues that include unemployment, Manipur violence, inflation etc.
The Uniform Civil Code will replace all the existing personal laws which were based upon religions, customs and traditions. It will bring one common law for all irrespective of their caste, creed, religion, gender etc.
