Last night’s announcement of the 76th British Academy Film Awards, or BAFTA 2023, revealed that the German picture All Quiet on the Western Front would win the majority of the prizes. Seven awards were won by the Edward Berger-directed movie, including best director, adapted screenplay, cinematography, best score, best sound, and best foreign language picture. Prior to the Oscars, the big win gave the movie the proper momentum.
The biopic Elvis and the Irish movie The Banshees of Inisherin were the night’s next two major winners. Elvis star Austin Butler won the prize for best actor, and the movie also won for casting, costume design, and hair and makeup. The best British picture award, original screenplay, best supporting actress for Kerry Condon, and best supporting actor for Barry Keoghan all went to Martin McDonagh’s Banshees. However, Cate Blanchett took home the best acting prize for Tar.
Navalny, a documentary about imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, won the BAFTA award this year instead of the Indian documentary All That Breathes.
The front-runner for the Academy Awards, Everything Everywhere All at Once, was the night’s major loser, taking home just one award for editing out of its ten BAFTA nominations.
The ceremony was held at London’s Royal Festival Hall, and actor Richard E Grant served as the ceremony’s stylish and self-deprecating host. The UK’s movie academy celebrated its achievements in becoming more diverse but acknowledged that more work remained to be done. Grant also made light of the notorious fight between Will Smith and Chris Rock at the Oscars last year during his opening monologue.
