The global cinema industry has witnessed an exponential increase in the popularity of South Indian films, in addition to its growth within India. The global demand for Indian films is enormous, and it isn’t just for Bollywood anymore—films in South Asian regional languages are also attracting a lot of attention. Not only are these movies being released all around the world, but they are also doing quite well at the box office. Here are a few instances of films that made more than Rs 100 crore on the foreign box office.
Manjummel Boys is a story and film directed by Chidambaram. It features important roles played by Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, and Ganapathi S Poduval. The movie is based on an actual 2006 incident. It also became the first film in the Malayalam film industry to mint over Rs 200 crore, surpassing Tovino Thamas’s 2018 records.
Aavesham is another Malayalam film on the list of South Indian films that have achieved international success. The main actor in it is Fahadh Faasil. Despite having a meagre budget of around Rs 30 crore, the movie made nearly Rs 150 crore and was dubbed a blockbuster. As of right now, Aavesham is the fourth-highest grossing South Indian movie of 2024.
Blessy is the writer, director, and co-producer of the survival drama The Goat Life. The movie is based on Benyamin’s 2008 best-selling Malayalam novel Aadujeevitham. Prithviraj Sukumaran, Jimmy Jean-Louis, and KR Gokul play the main characters in the movie, while Amala Paul and Shobha Mohan play supporting parts. Globally, the movie brought in over Rs 160 crore.
Directed by Girish AD, Premalu is a romantic comedy film featuring Naslen K Gafoor and Mamitha Baiju in the key roles. At the box office, the movie brought in approximately Rs 136 crore, comprising nearly Rs 95 crore from India and Rs 40 crore from overseas distribution. It is presently the sixth highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time based on box office receipts.
The movie action-adventure Dhanush plays the lead role in the film Captain Miller, while Shiva Rajkumar, Aditi Balan, Edward Sonnenblick, Sundeep Kishan, Priyanka Mohan, and John Kokken make up the ensemble supporting cast. The movie received largely favourable reviews and made over 100 crores in revenue.
The comedy horror flick Aranmanai 4 stars Tamannaah Bhatia, Raashii Khanna, Yogi Babu, Ramachandra Raju and Santhosh Prathap in key roles. The film grossed over Rs 100 crore at the box office, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise so far and one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of 2024.
