First IPS officer to resign in recent years from Bengal

Kabir was in headlines recently when he made three BJP members arrested for raising slogans in the rally led by new TMC turned BJP leader Suvendhu Adhikari. The slogans raised were “Shoot the traitors”.

A General rank Inspector and the Superintendent of police from Chandannagar in Bengal’s Hooghly Humayun Kabir resigned from his office citing personal reasons. His retirement was due till 30 April. However, he could get extension but decided to resign by 31 January.

He was in headlines recently when he made three BJP members arrested for raising slogans in the rally led by new TMC turned BJP leader Suvendhu Adhikari. The slogans raised were “Shoot the traitors”.

On the arrest of those three BJP members TMC was criticized for not taking any action in the favour of those arrested as when the TMC members did the same a day before, there were no actions taken against them. However, a TMC MP Saugata Roy said that the arrests were “a police matter not a party matter”.

The SP is the first IPS officer to resign in recent years from Bengal and he was promoted to IG rank in last December. Many speculations have been triggered after his resignation that ‘he may follow suit,’ as his wife Anindita Kabir had joined TMC in last Novemer Kabir. The officer has also cleared that he will not join politics.

On being asked about the reason behind the resignation Kabir said he is unable to get time for other works due to his association with several NGOs in the state and on joining politics he said joining politics was his wife’s own choice and he has no plans to join.

After his resignation Gaurav Sharma is likely to take his place who is currently a joint commissioner in the Kolkata Police.
