Facing ₹20 Crore Debt and Constant Threats, Dehradun Family’s Tragic Suicide Raises Questions About Financial Pressure and Mental Health

According to the son of his maternal uncle, the dead Praveen Mittal and his family were constantly threatened with death because they were unable to repay a loan, and they were also burdened with a debt of Rs 20 crore.

Praveen and six of his family members were discovered dead in a car parked outside a home in Panchkula, Haryana, on Sunday. Locals were able to extract the one family member who was still breathing after discovering the others inside the car comatose. Prior to his passing, the individual disclosed that his family was “drowning in debt.” He said to Puneet Rana, a local, “I will die in five minutes as I have also consumed poison.”

Praveen, originally from Barwala in Hisar, moved to Panchkula twelve years ago. According to Praveen’s cousin Sandeep Agarwal, he operated a scrap mill in Himachal Pradesh that the bank later seized because of unpaid loans.

The family had to abruptly relocate from Hisar to Dehradun due to the growing debt. “For five years, he did not stay in touch with anyone,” Sandeep stated. Sandeep further mentioned that they left Hisar because of the death threats. They were currently residing close to a Saketri village in Panchkula, where Praveen was earning a living by operating a cab. “The bank had already seized Praveen’s two flats, his factory and his vehicles,” Sandeep stated.

According to Sandeep, he had spoken with Praveen five days prior, and in the suicide note he left behind, his cousin asked him to carry out the final rites. “Police have said that Praveen left behind a suicide note, in which he requested that I perform his last rites,” he told the news agency.
