Exam Dispute Sparks Violence in Bihar, Students Clash with Police, Prashant Kishor Named in FIR

Due to the large-scale student protests that took place in Bihar on Sunday, Prashant Kishore, a former election strategist who is now a political leader, the leaders of his Jan Suraaj party, a few coaching facility owners, and 700 unidentified demonstrators have all been charged with a crime. They are said to have gathered persons “unauthorised,” provoked them, and caused a law and order issue.

According to the police, the Jan Suraaj Party also organised an unapproved protest march and led the throng at Gandhi Maidan in Patna, which descended into violence, smashing police loudspeakers and causing altercations with on-duty police officials and magistrates. “Despite repeated requests by the administration, these people violated the guidelines of the administration and disrupted public order,” according to the police.

Following claims of a paper leak, the Bihar Public Service Commission candidates staged a large demonstration on Sunday, seeking a retest of the 70th Combined Competitive Examination. The police broke up the demonstration with batons and water cannons. Before marching towards JP Golambar, the students had assembled at Gandhi Maidan with the goal of reaching Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s home. They desired to speak with him about the matter.

Prashant Kishor had stated that he was fully in favour of the pupils. He declared that a delegation of students would meet with the Chief Secretary and took part in their march to JP Golambar. However, the students’ insistence that they only meet with the Chief Minister resulted in police action. Earlier, on Saturday, Gandhi Jayanti, Mr. Kishor had organised a “Chhatra Sansad” in Gandhi Maidan to talk about the problems facing the students and plan their next course of action. However, the event was not permitted by the city government.

In the upcoming assembly election, Jan Suraaj, a group that rebranded itself as a political party in October of this year, is anticipated to run in every seat in Bihar. After two years of significant travel throughout the state and a yatra, the former electoral strategist converted the group. He had claimed that the party would change electoral politics from focussing on sops to topics that should be on the agenda for elections.
