ECI To Meet Health Secretary To Understand Covid Situation And Take Suggestions To Improve Protocols

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to meet the Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan today, to understand the Covid-19 situation in the country.

According to the sources, the election body will seek information over the Covid-19 and the new emerged variant omicron from the Health Secretary.

The ECI is also likely to take suggestions from Mr Bhushan to improve the Covid-19 guidelines for the upcoming assembly elections.

This comes amid the petitions being filed for delaying the elections and states imposing curbs due to the rising omicron cases.

The government tenures are ending on different dates in March, 2022 for the states of Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa and for Uttar Pradesh, it is ending in May, 2022.

The Election Commission is scheduled to release election dates next month as the assembly elections will take place in the months of February-March.
Meanwhile, the Allahabad High Court had urged to postpone UP elections by 2-3 months amid the rising fear of omicron.

The court warned that if any complacency happened, the situation may get of out of control as happened during the second wave of the pandemic.
