Amid the questions on conducting elections, the Election Commission is unlikely to postpone the upcoming assembly elections in five states – Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Manipur, Goa and Punjab. The EC has asked the state governments to speed up their vaccination in these five states.
This comes after the ECI met with the Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan to talk on the Covid-19 situation in the country.
During it’s discussion with the Health Secretary, the polling body took inputs on the issues including the vaccination in the poll bound states, spreading of omicron cases in the states and also some suggestions to improve its Covid-19 guidelines for the election campaigning, polling days and the vote counting days.
In the meeting, the ECI even requested the Health Minister to ramp up its vaccination process, so that everyone is fully vaccinated as early as possible
In Goa and Uttarakhand, almost whole adult population have received their first dose. In Uttar Pradesh, the vaccination figure lies at 85% and in Punjab and Manipur it is 80%.
