EC Demands Explanation From Congress Following BJP’s ‘Separation’ Remark

Following BJP’s remark on sovereignty amounting to secession attributing to Congress former chief Sonia Gandhi, the Election Commission has asked the grand old party chief Mallikarjun Kharge to clarify.

On May 6 a tweet by Congress referring Mrs Gandhi said, “the Congress will not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka’s reputation, sovereignty or integrity”.

As the election campaigning ended in Karnataka, Prime Minister Modi in his final rally in the state accused Congress of “working against India’s interests” and advocating a “separation” of Karnataka from India.

The BJP then filed a complaint against Congress and Mrs Gandhi demanding EC to take action on the same.

“Karnataka is a very important member state in the Union of India and any call to protect the sovereignty of a member State of the Union of India amounts to a call for secession and is fraught with perilous & pernicious consequences,” said BJP in letter to the Election Commission.

Referring from BJP’s allegations, the EC called Congress’ tweet “violative of the mandatory oath undertaken by the political parties under section 29A (5) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951”.

“In view of the above, you are requested to clarify and take rectification measures in respect of the social media post which has been put up on the INC Twitter handle and attributed to Chairperson CPP,” said the apex election body.
