A 4.3 on the Richter scale earthquake was reported to have occurred early on Monday morning in the Sikkim town of Yuksom, according to the National Center for Seismology. The earthquake struck at roughly 4.15 am, 10 kilometres deep, and 70 kilometres north-west of Yuksom.
The NCS posted a tweet with the following details: “Earthquake of Magnitude:4.3, Occurred on 13-02-2023, 04:15:04 IST, Lat: 27.81 & Long: 87.71, Depth: 10 Km, Location: 70 km NW of Yuksom, Sikkim, India.”
A 4 magnitude earthquake was reported to have struck the centre of Assam earlier on Sunday, according to an official bulletin. It stated there had been no initial reports of any casualties or property damage.
According to a report from the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake was registered at 4:18 pm, and its epicentre was in the Nagaon district on the Brahmaputra river’s southern bank.
It further stated that the earthquake was 10 kilometres deep.
The epicentre was in central Assam, around 160 km east of Hojai.
Along with residents in Sonitpur on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra river, people in the neighbouring districts of West Karbi Anglong, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, and Morigaon also felt the tremor.
As a result of the northeastern states’ location in a high seismic zone, earthquakes frequently strike the area. Nearly a week after one of the most devastating earthquakes to hit Turkey and Syria, rescuers continued to extricate people from the rubble on Sunday as Turkish officials worked to restore order around the disaster area and started taking legal action about building collapses.
The death toll in both countries following Monday’s earthquake and subsequent aftershocks went past 33,000 and appeared to keep rising as the likelihood of discovering additional survivors decreased. It was Turkey’s deadliest earthquake since 1939.
