Delhi’s Environment Minister Calls High-Level Meeting As Air Quality Slips Back To ‘Severe’ Category

A day after showing a slight improvement in air quality, the Delhi air quality again slips back to ‘severe’ category on Wednesday from ‘very poor’ category.

As per the data released from Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) the overall air quality index (AQI) in national capital stood at 421 at 7 am in the morning today.

Following the Supreme Court’s intervention the 23 crore-smog tower in Delhi’s Cannaught Place is likely to be ‘operationalised’, which was locked up due to rising levels of pollution. Officials from maintenance and service department arrived at the smog tower.

The apex court on Tuesday summoned the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) chairperson Ashwani Kumar for locking up the smog towers and ordered to operationalise them with immediate notice.

The 24-metre tall smog tower has a capacity to clean 1,000 cubic metres of air within one-kilometre radius per second. It was built in 2021.

To follow the orders given by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, Delhi’s Environment Minister Gopal Rai has called for a high-level meeting at the Secretariat at 12 noon today. Ministers from all concerned departments including Revenue Minister Atishi and Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot are expected to take part in the meeting.
