According to sources on Wednesday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has detained six Delhi Transport Department personnel on suspicion of corruption and bribery as part of a massive post-Assembly election operation. Prior to taking definitive action, the CBI conducted an undercover surveillance operation to confirm the allegations of pervasive corruption within the department, which led to the arrests.
CBI insiders said that their probe turned up preliminary proof of bribery in the transport department at several levels. “The corruption was systematic, extending across various offices. The officials in question were engaging in illicit transactions related to vehicle registrations, permits, and fitness certificates,” a senior CBI officer told the news agency, requesting anonymity.
Following the conclusion of the Assembly elections, in which the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a crushing defeat and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regained power after 27 years, this is the CBI’s first significant anti-corruption action. The BJP clinched 48 out of 70 seats, reducing AAP to 22 seats, while Congress remained at zero for the third consecutive election.
