Delhi govt to submit proposal in SC for possible lockdown
The Delhi government plans to file a request with the Supreme Court on Monday for a possible lockdown in the national capital due to excessive pollution levels. On Sunday, the air quality in Delhi improved slightly, but it remained in the’very poor’ category. Gopal Rai, the Environment Minister, stated that his administration will file a lockup proposal to the Supreme Court on Monday in order to further reduce pollution.
On Sunday, the national capital’s 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) was 330, down from 437 the day before, thanks to lower emissions from field fires in Haryana and Punjab. On Friday, the AQI was about 471, the lowest of the season so far.
The Supreme Court has asked the government to explain the efforts it has taken to reduce pollution so far. The Centre will also discuss the initiatives that will most likely be implemented to enhance the air quality index and reduce it to at least 200 points from its present level of over 500 on average.
