Death Toll At Nanded Hospital Rises To 35. CM Shinde Assures Investigation

The death toll at Medical College and Hospital in Maharashtra’s Nanded rose to 35 from 24 on Tuesday. Out of these 35 deaths, 16 were infants and 19 adults.

After meeting with the doctors and administration at the Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Hospital, medical education minister Hasan Mushrif said the shortage of doctors has resulted into the deaths.

He also said that until the vacancies are not filled by regular recruitment process the government will hire doctors on contract basis to manage the shortage.

In a similar incident, 14 additional deaths including 2 infants were reported from a Government Medical College and Hospital in Sambhaji Nagar. These deaths are also said to because of lack of medicines and manpower, said hospital superintendent, Dr Vijay Kalyankar.

Amid these increasing death tolls, Union Minister of state for health Bharti Pawar has asked for a report from the hospitals. She said, “this is an unfortunate incident. We have spoken to the concerned authorities and sought an explanation. The situation at the Nanded hospital is grave. Further action will be taken after we receive a detailed report”.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has assured that the cause behind these deaths will be investigated and no one responsible will be spared.
