This month marks the theatrical re-release of the ageless classic “Umrao Jaan,” starring veteran Bollywood actress Rekha. The romantic musical film, which was first released in 1981, was directed by Muzaffar Ali. The main actors are Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, Farooq Shaikh, and Rekha.
Those who couldn’t watch this film on big screens will be able to watch this classic film on June 27, 2025. According to the PVR Inox’s official release, NFSC-NFAI has restored this Bollywood movie in 4K resolution. For the uninitiated, the period drama film in Hindi took home multiple accolades for its acting, music, and direction. In case you’re unaware, ‘Umrao Jaan’ is regarded as one of Rekha’s greatest films and earned her the National Film Award in the Best Actress category.
The official PVR INOX Instagram page declared that the 1981 movie “Umrao Jaan” would be re-released in theatres. The caption of the post reads, “A story of elegance, love, and timeless music! Revisit Umrao Jaan in stunning 4K – a cinematic jewel restored, reimagined, and reborn with our Curated Shows. #UmraoJaan re-releasing at PVR INOX on June 27!”
The movie is about Amiran, a young woman who was abducted and sold into a brothel in Lucknow. She was given the name Umrao there and went on to become a famous courtesan. The movie, which has an IMDb rating of 7.7, can be viewed on Prime Video, an over-the-top streaming service. Shahryar wrote the lyrics for this movie, while Khaiyaam composed the music.
