Char Dham Ban Lifted in Uttarakhand as Barkot-Yamunotri Road Gets Restored After Cloudburst

The 24-hour ban on the Char Dham Yatra was lifted on Monday, June 30, 2025, as per officials. Garhwal Divisional Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey confirmed the news in a statement, saying, “The 24-hour ban on the Char Dham Yatra has now been lifted.”

He further explained that the District Magistrates along the Yatra route have been instructed to manage vehicle movement according to the weather conditions in their respective areas.

The suspension of the Yatra had taken place on Sunday after officials issued a heavy rain alert. This was followed by a cloudburst that triggered a massive landslide near Barkot. Tragically, two workers were killed, and seven others went missing in the disaster. Today, Chamba town also saw heavy rainfall, causing further concerns in the region.

Earlier, on June 29, officials managed to repair the Barkot-Yamunotri road, which had been hit by the landslide in Uttarkashi district. The road has now been cleared and made passable. However, the search for the seven missing workers continues.

Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya spoke to news agency, confirming that repairs had been completed on the washout near Silai Band. He added that efforts were still ongoing to smooth out other parts of the road affected by the landslide. “The washout caused by the cloudburst before Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunotri road has been repaired, and the road is now clear. We’re still working on repairing the remaining damaged portions,” Arya said.

The District Magistrate also noted that the 33 KV power line in the affected area had been restored, and work was in progress to fix the 11 KV line. Despite the repairs, the search for the seven missing workers continues. NDRF, SDRF, police, and revenue teams are involved in the ongoing rescue operation. According to Uttarkashi Police, the landslide and cloudburst occurred about four kilometers ahead of Paligad, on the Yamunotri National Highway, near Silai Band.

The rescue mission includes personnel from the police, fire services, health departments, and public works teams. As of now, two bodies have been recovered. They have been identified as Kewal Bisht, 43, from Karmamohani, Rajapur District, Nepal, and Duje Lal, 55, from Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh.
