On Thursday, May 29, 2025, the Centre approved the nomination of three Supreme Court judges. As a result, the supreme court now has 34 judges, the maximum permitted number.
Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Union Minister of Law and Justice, posted on X to confirm the appointments. “The President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India (CJI), was pleased to appoint Justice N.V. Anjaria, the incumbent Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court; Justice Vijay Bishnoi, presently functioning as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court; and Justice Atul S. Chandurkar of the Bombay High Court as SC judges,” the Minister wrote.
Chief Justice of India B. R. Gavai is scheduled to administer the oath of office to the newly appointed judges on Friday morning, May 30, 2025. This occurred three days after the Centre received the recommendations from the Supreme Court Collegium, which was led by Chief Justice Gavai.
Beginning his career in 1988, Justice Anjaria was appointed to the Gujarat High Court on November 21, 2011, and on September 6, 2013, he was made a permanent judge. On February 25 of last year, he was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
Beginning his career in 1989, Justice Bishnoi was appointed to the Rajasthan High Court in January 2013 as an Additional Judge. In January 2015, he was sworn in as a permanent judge of the Rajasthan High Court. In June 2013, Justice Atul S. Chandurkar, who began his career in 1988 as well, was named an Additional Judge in the Bombay High Court.
