The father of the party of the Akali Dal and five-time former chief minister of Punjab, Parkash Singh Badal, passed away on Tuesday in a Mohali private hospital. He was 95.
“Despite receiving proper medical care, S Parkash Singh Badal passed away from his illness. In a statement, the hospital expressed its “sincere condolences” for S Parkash Singh Badal’s passing.
According to hospital director Abhijeet Singh, the Punjabi politician passed away around 8 o’clock.
Following complaints of difficulty breathing, the former chief minister was brought to Fortis Hospital in Mohali a week ago.
The veteran politician worked his way up the political ladder, beginning as a rural sarpanch, before running in his first assembly election as a Congressman in 1957, at the age of 30.
The state of Punjab has never had a Chief Minister younger than Parkash Singh Badal. He was 43.
He only lost two elections in a career spanning more than seven decades: one in 1967 and the most recent in the Punjab assembly election in 2022. The loss was especially painful for him because he had been leading Lambi for many years.
State mourning will be observed nationwide in India to honour Parkash Singh Badal, a former chief minister of Punjab who passed away on April 25. The national flag will be flown at half-mast on all buildings where it is normally flown on April 26 and 27. There will be no official entertainment during this two-day period of mourning.
The personal assistant of his son and party president Sukhbir Singh Badal shared the news of the SAD patron’s passing. The legendary politician’s funeral ceremonies will be conducted at the village of Badal in Bhatinda.
From 1970 to 1971, from 1977 to 1980, and from 2007 to 2017, Parkash Singh Badal presided as Punjab’s chief minister. Surinder Kaur Badal, his wife, his son Sukhbir Singh Badal, and Harsimrat Kaur Badal are his surviving family members.
