The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was informed by the parents of the trainee physician who was raped and killed at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata that other interns and hospital doctors might have been involved in the crime, an officer said on Friday.
The identities of those the parents believe to be connected to their daughter’s rape and murder at the government-run hospital were also provided to the CBI. The Calcutta High Court has directed the CBI to look into the matter.
“The parents told us that they suspect the involvement of multiple people behind the sexual assault and murder of their daughter. They have given names of a few interns and doctors who worked with her at the hospital,” a CBI officer told news agency.
Interviews with these people and Kolkata Police personnel involved in the first probe are being given top priority by the CBI.
“We have identified at least 30 suspects and have started questioning them,” the CBI officer said.
Two post-graduate trainees and a member of the house staff who were with the doctor the night she was raped and killed were called in by the CBI today. Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the hospital, was taken for questioning by the CBI.
Two days after the woman’s body was discovered, Dr. Ghosh resigned. He claimed he was afraid of being harmed and went to the Calcutta High Court for safety, which told him to speak with a single Bench.
According to the officer, the CBI forced the arrested accused, a volunteer from the community, to go through a sophisticated 3D reconstruction of the crime scene in the hospital’s seminar hall. On August 9, the post-graduate trainee’s body was discovered in the seminar room.
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, accused the BJP and the opposition CPI(M) today of planning vandalism at RG Kar Hospital and attempting to conceal the facts surrounding the lady doctor’s rape and murder.
BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia sharply retaliated on her, branding the leaders of the Opposition group INDIA as “political vultures” who only voice their opinions on crimes against women when it suits them politically. The leaders of the INDIA bloc, including Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Manish Sisodia, Uddhav Thackeray, and others, were referred to by Mr. Bhatia as “political vultures” and urged to “break their silence” on such horrific atrocities in order to rise above their vote-bank politics.
“This silence will cost the INDIA bloc dearly. These people are not politicians or public leaders, they are political vultures who speak out on crimes against sisters and daughters after seeing which state government is there,” he said, adding law and order has collapsed in Bengal.
“Now the case has come to the CBI. Soon all the guilty will be given the harshest punishment, no accused will be spared, no matter how big a leader is protecting them,” the BJP spokesperson said.
Medical professionals and students are demanding a law to guarantee safety in hospitals and medical professionals’ workplaces, and they are staging protests around the nation.
