BJP on Sunday suspended it’s national spokesperson Nupur Sharma over her comments against Prophet Muhammad that erupted a huge controversy.
The member secretary of Central Disciplinary Committee, Om Pathak said that Nupur Sharma’s comments were against the party’s take on many matters. He said that she had breached BJP’s constitution.
“I have been directed to convey to you that pending further inquiry, you [Sharma] are suspended from the party and from your responsibilities/assignments if any, with immediate effect,” he said.
In few hours later of Nupur’s comments, the saffron party came up with its statement saying that “it strongly denounces insult of any religious personalities”. However, the statement did not mention Nupur’s comments.
Nupur had made the controversial remarks at show over Gyanvapi mosque-Kashi Vishwanath temple dispute on May 26.
Following Nupur’s remarks, a huge violence erupted in Kanpur on Friday. Videos showing people pelting stones at each other were being widely shared. According to the officials, at least 40 persons including 20 police personnel were injured during the violence.
However, the police has so far arrested 24 people in the incident.
Meanwhile, the Kanpur Police Commissioner VS Meena has announced that the people accused will be charged under the National Security Act and Gangster Act.
“We have identified 36 people who were involved in the violence with help of CCTV footage and other video recordings of the incidents,” he said. “A total of 24 people have been arrested so far of which 18 were held on Friday.”
In the whole timeline, the Arab countries have also expressed their discontent over Sharma’s comments against Prophet Muhammed.
Hashtags calling boycott Indian products are widely trending over Twitter in many Arab countries after Nupur’s comments.
The Qatar foreign ministry has even called India’s Ambassador, Deepak Mittal to explain Nupur’s remarks
“State of Qatar is expecting a public apology and immediate condemnation of these remarks from the Government of India,” said a release from the foreign ministry. “Allowing such Islamophobic remarks to continue without punishment, constitutes a grave danger to the protection of human rights and may lead to further prejudice and marginalization, which will create a cycle of violence and hate.”
So far, three FIR have been registered against Nupur Sharma.
