Mamata Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress leader and chief minister of West Bengal, declared on Monday that her party will back the Congress in areas where it is strong in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
For the first time, Ms. Banerjee made plain Trinamool’s view on a potential plan to unite the opposition in the upcoming electoral fight.
“Let them battle wherever the Congress is powerful. There is nothing wrong (with that); we will support them. However, people must also back other political parties, Ms. Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat.
However, to get support, Congress also has to back other parties, she said.
The leader of Trinamool also made it clear that she anticipated that regional players will have preference in their strongholds under the seat-sharing model.
She remarked, “Strong regional parties must be given precedence.
After the BJP lost power in Karnataka, Ms. Banerjee earlier congratulated the local populace while omitting to mention the venerable institution with whom Trinamool has previously clashed.
