Mass gathering which is one of the major causes of surge in Covid cases is happening in West Bengal as it has been conducting public rallies for its eight phase of elections. With the Covid conditions of other states being reported Bengal whose covid situations was undermined so far has come out to be worsely affected by the virus.
The state has recorded 1.7 per cent of fatality rate which is the third highest after Punjab and Sikkim. The national average per cent is 1.3. Bengal which is undermined due to its elections is affected as much as Maharashtra, country’s worst affected state.
Bengal which has a test positivity rate of 6.5 per cent against India’s average 5.2 per cent is at the seventh position in this regard. TPR is the percentage of people who have tested positive out of all those who have tested.
While, in terms of daily cases Bengal has been recording highest number of cases in comparison with its neighbours — Jharkhand, Assam, Odisha and Bihar. In figures Bengal is reporting an average of 3,040 cases every day which are much higher than Jharkhand (1,734), Assam (234), Odisha (981) and Bihar (2,122).
Thought Bengal has lesser total cases but this current rapid rise is a grave concern for the state. In February the doubling time of cases in the state was 2,000 days which has now decreased by 15 times to 138 days as of April 12.
The state which is conducting its elections in eight phases is campaigning aggressively for each phase. Now the fifth phase will be conducted on April 17 and the remaining three on 22, 26 and 29. Each party is busy in campaigning to get more and more votes without paying any heed to the Covid-19 guidelines.
