Assam’s education minister, Ranoj Pegu, reported on June 12 that the state had a 5.95 percent drop in enrollment, with 70,95,759 pupils enrolling this year compared to 75,44,956 for 2022–23.
According to the Student Database Management Information System (SDMIS), there are 4.49 lakh fewer pupils this year than the year before. The education minister continued by saying that the authorities have been tasked with investigating and determining the causes of the drop in registrations.
The minister added that one of the justifications offered by district officials was that a number of children were enrolling in other private schools that were not listed on the UDISE portal.
