Ashok Chavan, the former chief minister of Maharashtra, is expected to join the BJP today, one day after leaving the Congress party. Chavan would arrive at the Mumbai BJP office at almost 12 pm to join the party.
In response to rumours that he will join the BJP, Chavan resigned from both the Congress and his position as an MLA.
The state Congress president Nana Patole received a letter from the previous chief minister resigning as a primary member.
Chavan stated he had “not yet decided to join the BJP” after resigning.
The exit of top Congress stalwarts Baba Siddique and Milind Deora has compounded the party’s problems in the state. Chavan is the son of former chief minister and Union home minister SB Chavan.
Chavan reiterated that he had not yet made up his mind to join the BJP and that his choice to quit the Congress was personal.
Chavan resigned as an MLA by presenting his resignation to assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, as well as as a primary member of the state Congress, according to a letter he sent to state Congress president Nana Patole.
In addition to telling reporters, “I have not yet made any decision to join BJP,” Chavan insisted he would not talk about anything going on in the Congress in a public setting.
