A Samajwadi Member And Two Others Booked Under Sedition For Pro-Taliban Comments

Shafiqur Rahman Barq, a member of the Samajwadi Party from Sambhal, and two others have been charged with sedition for uttering pro-Taliban comments.

On Tuesday, Barq issued a statement in which he defended the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan and compared it to India’s freedom struggle.

A private person named Rajesh Singhal filed a complaint against Barq and two others – Faizan Chaudhary and Mohammad Mukim – late at night in Sambhal under charges of 124 A (sedition), 153 A (promoting religious enmity), and 295 A (promoting enmity on religious grounds) (intention to outrage religious beliefs).

The allegation stated that Barq had linked the Taliban with leaders of India’s freedom movement in a press briefing, according to Chakresh Mishra, SP of Sambhal. The complaint stated, “This has hurt the sentiments of the public and has insulted the freedom fighters.”

“Taliban has been declared a terrorist organisation by the Indian government. Therefore, such statements fall under the category of treason,” Mishra went on to say that the other two had made similar claims on Facebook as well.

According to Barq, the Taliban do not want Russia or the United States to entrench themselves in Afghanistan and instead want to administer their own country. He then contrasted it to India’s independence war, claiming that the entire country had struggled for independence under British rule. “They want to be free. This is their personal matter. How can we interfere?” Barq remarked.
