Gujarat becomes the third state to pass a legislation on ‘Love Jihad’

The new 'love jihad' law would invite a jail term of five years and Rs 2 lakh penalty on the forced conversion of young women.

After Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh the Gujarat Assembly also on Thursday passed a legislation of Freedom of Religion Act 2003 Bill that penalises anyone who forces for religious conversion through marriage.

Any accused who is guilty will be penalised between 3-10 years and with a fine of Rs 5 lakh depending upon the case. Though the Bill was cleared after a day long discussion in Assembly, Congress leader Imran Khedawa started off a row after tearing a copy of the Bill.

“We’re going to make amendments to Gujarat Freedom of Religion Act, 2003. Today, we’re going to present a law before the state assembly, that will stop people from luring Hindu girls into marriage with the intention of religious conversion,” said the Gujarat Home Minister Pradipsinh Jadeja.

The new ‘love jihad’ law would invite a jail term of five years and Rs 2 lakh penalty on the forced conversion of young women. In case of a minor girl being converted, the punishment would go up to seven years in jail and Rs 3 lakh penalty.

The new ‘love jihad’ law would welcome a prison term of five years and Rs 2 lakh fine for forced conversion of young ladies but for minor girl it would go as long as seven years in prison and Rs 3 lakh fine.
