Political War of Words: BJP Accuses RJD-SP of Backing ‘Namazwad’ Amid Waqf Row

The BJP on Monday hit out at the Congress-RJD-Samajwadi Party alliance in Bihar, accusing them of putting religious interests ahead of socialist values. BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi compared the alliance’s opposition to the Waqf Act to the Emergency period, when the Constitution was ignored, saying it shows they don’t respect democratic rules.

Trivedi said the BJP-led NDA, along with its ally Janata Dal (United), truly stands for socialism — meaning fair sharing of wealth among all. This came after Tejashwi Yadav, former Bihar deputy chief minister, promised to scrap the Waqf Act if his coalition came to power. Yadav made these remarks during a protest by a Muslim group in Patna.

Trivedi criticized this, pointing out that the protest was held at Gandhi Maidan — a place known for people gathering to protect the Constitution during the Emergency. He said it’s sad that now, leaders are talking about throwing a law passed by Parliament “into the dustbin.” According to him, the opposition only cares about votes and ignores the Constitution and judiciary.

He questioned whether Muslim-majority countries like Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh, or even ISIS-controlled areas follow such laws. Trivedi asked if the opposition wants to impose stricter religious laws in Bihar than these countries.

He accused the RJD and Samajwadi Party of protecting a few people who control huge amounts of land, which goes against socialist ideals of fair wealth distribution. He called their version of socialism fake and mocked it as “Namazwad,” meaning prioritizing religious identity over real socialism. Trivedi said the BJP and JDU follow the true socialist principles of leaders like Karpoori Thakur and Jaiprakash Narayan, working to ensure poor people get their fair share.

He also claimed that by granting minority status to certain institutions, the opposition is trying to reduce reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and OBC communities “through the backdoor.” He warned that the BJP won’t allow this, and that India will follow Ambedkar’s Constitution — not religious laws.
