The Bengaluru Police have chosen to enlist the aid of their Uttar Pradesh counterpart in order to track down the culprit in the case, days after 34-year-old Atul Subhash committed suicide, purportedly as a result of harassment from his wife.
Following the uncovering of Munnekollal resident Atul Subhash’s body inside his flat on Monday, his brother Bikas Kumar lodged a complaint against Subhash’s mother Nisha, brother Anurag, uncle Sushil Singhania, and estranged wife Nikita Singhania. They were then charged with aiding and abetting suicide by the Marathahalli police. They are alleged to have demanded Rs 30 lakh for the right to visit his son and Rs 3 crore to have the cases against Atul withdrawn.
A Marathahalli police squad was sent to Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, according to Bengaluru police sources. “The investigating officer will determine whether to issue notices or take the suspects into custody,” a senior officer said. Nisha and Anurag reportedly left their Jaunpur residence late on Wednesday. They were also seen allegedly leaving their house around midnight in video clips that went viral on social media. “We are yet to receive any official communication from Bengaluru Police,” Jaunpur SP Ajaypal Sharma said on Thursday. According to Atul’s in-laws’ counsel, Vijay Mishra, Nikita had sued Atul for maintenance. “We are unable to understand why he ended his life. A thorough investigation is needed to uncover the truth,” he added. Addressing the media, Nikita’s uncle Sushil, who has been named an accused, said: “I have no connection with this and the divorce case has been going on for the last three years. Our family is not guilty and the allegations levelled by Subhash are not true. Nikita will respond to everything before the court of law.”
According to a police official who spoke to a news agency, Nisha Singhania and her son Piyush left their home in the Khowa Mandi area on a motorbike at around one in the morning on Thursday and haven’t been back since. He went on to say that the Khowa Mandi area had a regular police presence, which was necessary to maintain peace and order. Meanwhile, Kotwali police station in-charge, Inspector Mithilesh Mishra, said that the police have received no orders yet to arrest Nisha Singhania and the other accused. Nikita and Subhash had married in April 2019 and in 2022, she had registered an FIR against her husband and in-laws, accusing them of dowry harassment.
