Following its takeover of the investigation into the rape and death of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has called in eight physicians and other medical personnel from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to be questioned.
Three persons have been detained and ten people have been arrested by the Kolkata Police for destruction at the hospital during the statewide ‘Reclaim the Night’ demonstration. Authorities claim that late on Wednesday night, a group of 40–50 individuals broke into the hospital’s grounds dressed in protest attire and vandalised several items.
Starting on the eve of Independence Day, the demonstration will go on today.
Dr. Alok Bhandari, the president of the Delhi Medical Association, has called for a 24-hour strike that would begin on Saturday in protest of the case’s lack of progress.

A one-day work stoppage has been proposed by the Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association in protest of the vandalism at the RG Kar Hospital.
Additionally, a demonstration against the damage at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital in Azad Maidan in Mumbai today was scheduled for by the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD).
The Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) party called for a 12-hour national strike on Thursday, however Kolkata Metro Railway announced on Thursday that it would continue to operate normally on August 16.
In a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the CBI over the devastation that occurred at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari accused the TMC of committing vandalism at a hospital in Kolkata. He asked that the Central Armed Paramilitary Forces (CAPF) be sent out.
On August 9, the 32-year-old trainee physician’s semi-naked body was discovered in the hospital’s seminar hall, which is run by the government. Sanjay Roy, a community volunteer connected to Kolkata Police, has been taken into custody.
