Following the dissolution of the BJP’s alliance with the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) in Haryana yesterday, Nayab Singh Saini succeeded Manohar Lal Khattar as chief minister. The Assembly is in the middle of a floor test, which is essentially a formality.
In a hurried ceremony held in Chandigarh Friday evening, Nayab Singh Saini, 54, of the BJP, took the oath of office as the new Chief Minister of Haryana, just hours after Mr. Khattar and his cabinet quit.
Mr Saini claims the support of 48 MLAs. “We have urged the governor to convene the Assembly session when we will prove our majority on the floor of the House,” Mr Saini told reporters yesterday.
With the backing of seven Independent MLAs, the BJP now has 48 members, two more than the majority in the 90-member Assembly. It is also anticipated that five MLAs from Dushyant Chautala’s JJP will join the BJP.
Regarding seat distribution in the state for the impending Lok Sabha elections, the BJP and JJP got into a spat. While the BJP wanted to contest all 10 Lok Sabha seats, the JJP, which failed to win any in the 2019 election, wanted at least two seats.
Weeks before the October Haryana election and the Lok Sabha elections, the major BJP reorganisation has taken place.
After meeting with the governor on Monday, the whole cabinet, including three members of Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala’s JJP, resigned, along with veteran BJP leader Manohar Lal Khattar.
According to sources, Mr. Khattar is probably going to run in the Lok Sabha elections, maybe from Kurukshetra, the seat that Mr. Saini is giving up.
Mr. Saini’s appointment, a powerful leader among the Other Backward Classes (OBC), also symbolises the BJP’s emphasis on OBC and caste dynamics in each state before to an election.
The JJP has now declared that it will run alone for all ten seats. It is anticipated that Mr. Chautala would reveal the campaign’s specifics during a party rally this afternoon.
“I assure you that following the footsteps of Jannayak Chaudhary Devi Lal ji, I will always be dedicated to protecting the interests of Haryana and the people of Haryana. Our efforts for social and economic security of the people of Haryana will continue,” Mr Chautala said in a post on X – earlier known as Twitter.
