Over 37 people have lost their lives in rain related events in North India in last three days. Heavy rainfall in several regions like Himachal Pradesh and Delhi NCR have caused widespread damages.
As Haryana released more water into the Yamuna river, the river now in Delhi is flowing above the danger mark even more than it was last evening.
According to the officials, the river crossed the danger mark earlier than expected because “Haryana released more water today, the Yamuna will swell further in the next 24 hours,” they said.
The level which is beyond the danger mark for Yamuna is 207.49.
The administration has already begun the evacuation order of the people who are most vulnerable to the floods, they will soon be shifted to the relief camps.
Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced a series of measures to overcome the situation of waterlogging.
The Delhi government has even set up 16 control rooms to monitor the situation and to check the level of Yamuna river.
Speaking at a press conference, the Chief Minister sair it was for the first time in 40 years that Delhi is witnessing such heavy rainfall.
“The last time it rained as much as this was back in 1982 when there was 169 mm of rainfall in a 24-hour period. So, this is unprecedented rainfall and unfortunately the drainage system in the city is not designed to withstand such extreme rainfall,” said Mr Kejriwal.
The India Meteorological Department has issued alert of further heavy rainfall in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan.
Amid the heavy rainfall that has choked almost all the North India, the teams of National Disaster Response Force and Army have stepped in to carry out the rescue and relief operations in the vulnerable areas.
