3 Volunteers Died In Fresh Violence In Manipur, 5 Left Injured

Three “village volunteers” in Bishnupur district of Manipur were killed in firing by unidentified men. The fresh violence took place in the Khoijumantabi village, where the three volunteers were guarding the area in makeshift bunker.

In the shootout that took place on Saturday night even left five people injured, who were said to be in serious condition. They were immediately taken to the hospital in Imphal for their treatment, said the police.

Following the appeal made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Kuki community has withdrawn its roadblocks from National Highway in Kangpokpi district of Manipur.

As the Home Minister expressed his “deep concern to restore peace and harmony”, so the blockade on the highway has been cleared with immediate effect, said the Kuki organizations.

There are two National Highways in Manipur — NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam) and NH-2 (Imphal-Dimapur). The Kuki organizations had blocked the NH-2 since the violence first broke out in Manipur in the month of May.

On May 3, a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ led to a violence in Manipur for the first time. The march took place to protest against the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status made by the Meitei community.

A curfew was imposed in eight district of state after the violence took place and the internet services were also shut on the entire state for many days.
