Congressman Deepender Hooda claimed on Thursday that the Delhi Police had held him outside the Jantar Mantar location where the wrestlers were protesting. He claimed that after being detained, a police squad escorted him to the Vasant Vihar Police Post.
“I would like to speak with wrestlers for five minutes. Without my PSO, I’ll be travelling alone to the protest location. In a video published on his personal account, Hooda can be heard telling police officers, “I will see the ladies wrestlers, inquire about their well-being, and appeal to all to keep peace.
After a late-night altercation between the protesting wrestlers and the police officers, Jantar Mantar has been heavily guarded. The wrestlers claim that the police officers mistreated them.
“Everyone in the nation must travel to Delhi to lend their support. Wrestler Bajrang Punia was cited as stating, “Police employing force against us, insulting ladies and doing nothing against Brijbhushan.
When the wrestlers were bringing in folding beds for their overnight stay, and the on-duty police employees allegedly started asking about it, the altercation erupted at around 11 p.m.
The wrestlers claimed that the police officers misbehaved and harassed the female wrestlers.
“If you want to kill us, then kill us. Did we win medals for the country to see this day? We have not even eaten our food. Does every man have a right to abuse women? These police men are holding guns, they can kill us,” wrestler Vinesh Phogat was quoted as saying.
“Somnath Bharti brought folding beds to the protest site in Jantar Mantar. Since there was no permission, we didn’t allow it, so some of the supporters of the protesting wrestlers tried to take out the beds from the truck and this led to an altercation…”, DCP Pranav Tayal told.
“We have instructed the wrestlers to file complaints regarding their grievances and will take appropriate action,” he continued. “A medical examination of the Policeman against whom they have made allegations is currently being conducted.”
