At an event organized by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s magazine Panchjanya, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that she herself is a middle class and she understands the difficulties faced by this class.
“I belong to middle class and identify myself as middle class so I can understand them, ” she said ahead the budget session of the Parliament.
The finance minister also said that steps like developing metro network, building smart cities and promoting ease of living have taken by the central government addressing the issues pertaining to the middle class.
She also said that no new taxes have been levied on those who earn less than ₹ 5 lakh annually by the current government.
Since 2020, the government is continuously increasing its capital expenditure which has been increased by 35% to ₹7.5 lakh crore in the current financial year, said the union minister.
Continuing our work for middle class, we build metro in 27 cities as middle class uses public transport the most. Many of the middle class people move to cities in search for jobs and for which we are continuously focusing on making smart cities, she said.
To reduce non-performing assets and to improve the health of public sector banks the Modi government is working on 4Rs – reduce, resolve, recapitalise, reform, she further said.
The Union Minister even said that the political parties who promise to provide freebie must fulfill their promises. They should be be aware of the feasibility whether the promises they make can be fulfilled considering the financial condition of the state, she said.
