Poland military is put on high alert amid a potential escalation of war in Ukraine after two people were killed in the country by a Russian-made missile.
The two people were killed in Przewodow village, but there is no proof regarding who fired the missile, said Warsaw. Meanwhile, the summon has been issued to Moscow’s ambassador for “immediate detailed explanations”.
Following an emergency national security council meeting, the Warsaw put its military on high alert.
“There has been a decision to raise the state of readiness of some combat units and other uniformed services,” said spokesperson Piotr Muller.
Speaking with his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda, US President Joe Biden extended full support to the Poland’s investigation in the matter, said the White House.
In the Article 5 of the founding treaty, Poland is entitled to protection in NATO’s commitment to collective defence. However, the response by the alliance is expected to be affected by whether the incident was intentional or accidental.
While, the ambassadors were to convene an emergency meeting on Wednesday, Mr Biden spoke to the alliance chief Jens Stoltenberg regarding the incident in Poland.
The blast drew huge condemnation across the world including European Union Chief Charles Michel termed it “shocking”, while, the French President Emmanuel Macron called for immediate talks during the ongoing G-20 summit in Indonesia’a Bali.
