The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), the political party of Hyderabad politician Asaduddin Owaisi, has been given permission to celebrate the birth anniversary of Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan at the Eidgah Ground in Hubballi, Karnataka, which was the subject of a significant uproar in August over Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
The AIMIM and a few other groups had requested permission from the municipal body to celebrate Tipu Jayanti at the Eidgah Maidan in Hubballi, Karnataka. On Wednesday, the civic organisation declared that it had approved the AIMIM’s proposal.
Sri Ram Sena, who requested to celebrate Kanakadasa Jayanti at the stadium, had objected to their request.
In a previous statement to a news outlet, Mayor Veeresh Anchatgeri said that while religious activities are permitted at the Eidgah Maidan, “no significant leaders will be allowed.”
“It is a matter that is related to Hubli-Dharwad Mahanagara Palike and the mayor, the Karnataka Chief Minister will look into it,” Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra told ANI.
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations were permitted to take place at the venue earlier in August, which caused a significant uproar.
The decision to permit celebrations there had been opposed by a local Muslim organisation, which claimed that the Municipal Commissioner was “seeking to transform the site of worship.”
The Supreme Court was also unwilling to halt the festivities when the case reached it, so it was the first time the Hindu festival was celebrated on public property.
According to the High Court, the “serious dispute” over ownership in the Bengaluru Eidgah land case, on which the Supreme Court had earlier ordered “status quo” in response to a petition by the Karnataka Waqf Board, did not exist here because the ground has been used for regular activities, such as parking cars, and is not a place of worship.
