India To Contribute 5 Lakh Dollars To UN Counterterrorism Organization, Says Jaishankar At UNSC Meet

On Saturday, Union Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar stated that terrorism still poses the greatest threat to humanity and that India would make a contribution of $5 lakh to the UN organisation that fights terrorism.

In order to support UNOCT’s efforts to help member states build their capacity to prevent and combat the threat of terrorism, India will voluntarily contribute $500,000 to the UN Trust Fund for Counter Terrorism this year “Speaking on Day 2 of the UNSC Counter-Terrorism Committee meeting in New Delhi, S. Jaishankar.

Representatives from all 15 UN Security Council members are participating at the counterterrorism meeting in Delhi.

The foreign minister also expressed his worry about the misuse of technology, stating that the accessibility of low-cost options and the expanding range of unidentified aerial platforms are concerning, and that terrorist organisations have recently used unmanned aerial vehicles like drones and quadcopters to transport weapons and drugs across international borders.

The use of unmanned aerial systems by terrorist organisations and organised criminal networks is a new concern for governments around the world “said Jaishankar.

In order to tackle this threat, the UN Security Council has developed an essential infrastructure over the past 20 years, centred principally on the counterterrorism sanctions system “said he.

This has been quite successful in alerting nations that have made terrorism a state-funded enterprise, “Added he.

“Despite this, as previous reports of the 1267 Sanctions Committee Monitoring Reports have noted, the threat of terrorism is only growing and expanding, particularly in Asia and Africa, “He went on to say.

The minister claimed that freedom, tolerance, and advancement are being attacked using the ethos of open societies.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged for coordinated international action to address the problem of how different terrorist organisations utilise new technology to radicalise people and sow division in nations.

He expressed alarm over how various terrorist organisations utilise new technologies to promote misinformation, sow division, and radicalise young people.

All 15 UNSC members were represented in a session earlier on Friday that took place at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel in Mumbai, which was the scene of a terrorist attack in 2008.

The topic of designating the masterminds of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack as international terrorists was brought up during the opening session in Mumbai by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

The delegates sat at a facsimile of the renowned horse-shoe table at the UNSC chamber in New York, with images of all major accused in various terror attacks on India projected on a screen, including Hafiz Saeed and Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi of Lashkar-e-Taiba.

China’s delegate urged the nations to “avoid mutual accusations and politicking technical matters,” but China refused to list the five terrorists “China previously prevented India and the US from naming Sajid Mir as a global terrorist at the UN in September of this year.

The head of the Counter-Terrorism Committee is presently held by India, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the UN Security Council adopted resolution 1373 of 2001 addressing counterterrorism, creating the Counter-Terrorism Committee.

Since the UNSC-CTC was founded in 2001, this is the first meeting of its kind to take place in India. The CTC is presided over by the Permanent Representative of India to the UN through 2022.

This UNSC meeting is being attended by representatives from Albania, Brazil, China, France, Gabon, Ghana, India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, Norway, Russia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), United Kingdom (UK), and the United States (US).
