Classes in Chandigarh University have been suspended for six days amid massive protest at the university over allegations against a girl for sharing private videos of other female students with a man in Shimla.
Late night on Monday around 1:30 am the protest finally ended after the demands by the protesting students were accepted by the university administration.
Following this, the administration suspended two hostel wardens. All the wardens from the hostel are being transferred and the timings are also changed.
The protest at the varsity campus broke out in middle of night on Saturday, after private pictures and videos of many female students were shared over the internet.
So far, three people have been detained in connection with making and sharing of objectionable videos. The three under detention include a female student, a 23-year-old man from Shimla, who is said to be her boyfriend and a 31-year-old man who is his friend.
The protesting girls have alleged that around 60 videos were made and shared. However, the university authorities in their statement have said that only one video was shared and that video was recorded and shared by the accused. The statement said that the girl made the video and shared herself with the man in Shimla.
In their demands, the students whose videos were shared should be allowed to record their statements before the representative of students and also sought an apology from the management.
The other demands included changing of hostel wardens, safety and also regarding the timing and safety issues.
Meanwhile, it was also alleged that the university administration was trying to cover up the reality. They continuously denied the allegations of videos of several students were made and shared and that many female students attempted suicide.
“No student committed suicide. A preliminary probe reveals that the accused girl had sent her own pictures/videos to her boyfriend. No other material was found. FIR filed. Police are probing it. I appeal to students and parents not to believe any rumours,” said the Pro-chancellor in her statement.
Gurpreet Deo, Punjab’s Additional Director General of Police also said that the accused girl recorded video of herself and shared with the man in Shimla and that no objectional videos of other girls were made and circulated.
According to the officials, an FIR has been registered under IPC section 354-C (voyeurism) and IT Act and further investigation is on in the case.
Hearing the news, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann immediately ordered a high-level inquiry into the case and said, “Sad to hear of the incident at Chandigarh University. Our daughters are our pride.
We have ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. Whoever is guilty will face strict action. I am constantly in touch with the administration. I appeal to all of you to avoid rumours.”
Punjab education minister Harjot Singh Bains, has urged the students at the Chandigarh University to stay calm and assured that no one guilty will be spared.
