At 12 people have died in a stampede at Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra of Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district early on Saturday, said the authorities. 13 have been injured in the incident.
“12 dead, 13 injured in the stampede at Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan in Katra. The incident occurred around 2:45 am, and as per initial reports, an argument broke out which resulted in people pushing each other, followed by a stampede,” said Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbagh Singh.
The 8 people, who have been identified out of the 12 dead were a 24-year-old Sonu Pandey, 26-year-old Dheeraj Kumar, 24-year-old Viney Kumar, 35-year-ole Shweta Singh, 30-year-old Arun Pratap Singh, 38-year-old Mamata, 35-yead-old Dharmveer Singh and 38-year-old Vaneet Kumar.
Dr Gopal Dutt, Block Medical Officer, Community Health Centre said, those who are dead were from Punjab, Delhi, Haryana and one from Jammu and Kashmir. The injured are under treatment at the Naraina hospital.
The situation is now under control, the police had launched a rescue operation to evacuate those who were stranded.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha have announced a total compensation of ₹12 lakh to the families of those killed in the stampede including 50,000 to each of the injured.
